I’m drawn to people who create films that tell powerful stories and there is no shortage of them here at marchedufilm festivaldecannes - I find myself attending all the pitch sessions to get a flavour of what’s coming next - it’s often a glimpse into the future. Better still it’s a deep dive into the mindsets of people who search out gripping and relatable films that will become blockbusters… that’s the dream. After 20 or more pitch sessions not including the casual encounters having coffee or sipping something stronger at the many and varied receptions I noticed a trend in the storylines. Sure there were some comedies and romances and historical tales but overall there was an apocalyptic flavour to a future that involved us living on other planets while the world went up in smoke, alien invasions, climate disasters of epic proportions, societal collapse, extraterrestrial invasions and naturally enough a fair bit of human v human conflict. There is a strange psychological shift happening right now, a kind of low-level ‘crisis mindset’. I worry about that, especially among young people. Endless images of war, political unrest, climate disasters, economic uncertainty and unsettling headlines have left many people feeling as though the world is permanently teetering on the edge of catastrophe. It shows up in curious ways - doom-scrolling at midnight, anxiety about travel, stockpiling basics, obsessively checking the news or imagining worst-case scenarios before anything has even happened. Psychologists say this constant exposure to global crisis can create a state of emotional hyper-vigilance, where the brain begins to expect disaster as the new normal. Yet there is also something deeply human in the response - a desire to protect what we love, to seek safety, meaning and connection in uncertain times. Perhaps the real challenge is learning how to stay informed without becoming emotionally consumed by a world that increasingly feels as though it is always in crisis mode. For me… I love to escape into absorbing stories on the cinematic screen. More of them would be good #cannesfilmfestival #filminvestor #picturepitcher...
